Goodstead is a working farm. The name is Old Norse: goðrstaðr. A place of fit.
The land is coulee, bush, and steep hills. It is not cleared or remade. Highland cattle fit what is present. Grazing follows contour, season, and response.
Cattle are selected animal by animal for structure, temperament, fertility, and fit to this place. Those that fit raise calves without help, hold condition, and stand with the herd.
In summer, cattle move daily behind a single hot wire. In winter, hay is unrolled on pasture.
Cows raise calves on forage alone. Calves overwinter with their dams. Bulls work rough ground within limited cycles.
The cattle are handled in the field. They come when called.
Land and livestock grow in worth over time. It comes through seasons, losses, hard winters, missed judgment, keeping the ones that prove themselves, and letting go of the ones that cannot.
What remains shapes land and herd.
